Important changes to pistol permit application submissions in Rensselaer County:
Recent legislation passed regarding obtaining a pistol permit has resulted in confusion to both the citizens of the county and the various agencies in charge of administering and implementing the permit process.
The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office supports reasonable licensing laws that aim to assure that firearms do not get into the wrong hands. However, the recent laws that were passed were rushed through the legislative process without input from the public or the key players that administer the process and appear to be a knee-jerk reaction to the recent Supreme Court decision. These laws place licensing requirements on the applicant that restrict and punish law abiding citizens from exercising their 2nd Amendment Right and do nothing to address the criminals who ignore laws and commit crimes with illegal handguns.
So, what does this mean for you?
The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office will continue to work in partnership with the Rensselaer County Clerk’s Office to keep processing pistol permit applications for our county residents. However, beginning on July 27, 2022, Rensselaer County will only be accepting ‘Possess on Premise’ pistol permit applications. ‘Possess on Premise’ submissions do not require a safety course, and you will be able to submit the existing pistol permit application until further notice. (A revised NYS Pistol Permit Application is scheduled to be available online September 1, 2022, but continue using the existing applications until further notice).
Rensselaer County will resume ‘Carry Concealed’ pistol permit application submissions pending the completion of the newly required 16-hour safety course. New York State is developing this training course, and has until April 1, 2023, to implement.
In no way should this message be construed as policy of the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office; New York State is solely responsible for the postponement of ‘Carry Concealed’ applications.
Any questions/concerns should be directed to Governor Kathy Hochul at 518-474-8390, or NYS Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins at 518-455-2415.
